Lollapalooza Heads To Europe For First Time In History

November 10, 2014

One of America’s premier music festivals is expanding once again following the announcement that Lollapalooza tickets will go on sale for its first ever European edition in Berlin next year.

The feast of alternative rock, which began as a travelling festival in 1991 before settling on its permanent location of Chicago’s Grant Park in 2005, has already been staged at various international sites including Sao Paolo’s Interlagos, Santiago’s O’Higgins Park and Buenos Aires’ Hipodromo de San Isidro.

But scheduled for September 12-13, 2015 at the German capital’s Tempelhof Airport, which closed to air traffic in 2008, but has since become a regular live music venue, Lollapalooza Berlin will be the first time that the festival has travelled across the Atlantic.

Perry Farrell, who conceived the original event as a farewell tour for his band, Jane’s Addiction, revealed in a statement that the city’s ‘energy and vibrant art and music scenes made it a perfect fit for Lollapalooza,’ and that he ‘can’t wait to share in this culture exchange.’

The festival suffered a setback last year when it was forced to indefinitely postpone its plans for an Israel leg in Tel Aviv due to financial and production constraints. However, having grossed over $70 million in sales of Lollapalooza tickets for this year’s four different versions, it’s clear that the brand is still as popular as ever.

Lollapalooza tickets for this new addition are expected to go on sale in the New Year. No artists have officially been confirmed to play yet, but with Arctic Monkeys, Eminem, Kings of Leon and Outkast just some of the acts who headlined this year’s festivals, Berlin music fans should start looking forward to a line-up which is guaranteed to be A-list.
