Could Live Nation's Ticket to Rock Be the Best New Way to Save at the Local Box Office This Summer?

February 26, 2016

It's a trend that's become all too familar -- and expensive -- for the common concertgoer. As festival announcements pour in during the winter and spring months, those hoping to see their favorite artists perform are forced to bear the brunt of a costly three or four-day festival pass, often exhausting their funds for a weekend-long adventure that includes tents or hotels, lack of sleep and less-than-stellar dietary habits.

Sure, single-day tickets are typically available for those looking keep their wallet in tact and festival mileage low, but even still, festival schedules aren't always forgiving to single-day attendees. This is exactly what Live Nation hopes to combat with their newly announced "Ticket to Rock" model, which offers a three-concert deal at one fixed cost at specific venues across North America throughout the summer.

As with most concepts, the idea will start small, combining three hard rock co-headlining tours at 12 different venues between June and August. Slipknot and Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and Korn and Disturbed and Breaking Benjamin will all hit those venues separately over that time. Instead of purchasing one ticket to each show, prospective concertgoers can attend each one for one fixed rate of $50 with Live Nation's Ticket to Rock.

In a world where resellers mad dash to the secondary market to inflate prices, that price point is somewhat of a bargain for three separate concerts. Among the dozen cities set to take on the three-night concert series include Albuquerque, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. As it stands now all three tours, including Rob Zombie tickets with Korn, own big resale prices on the secondary market, making the Ticket to Rock bundle a more affordable alternative.

The ticket bundle isn't an entirely new model for Live Nation, who launched the "Country Megaticket" in 2006. Featuring a rotating cast of the biggest names in country music, the Country Megaticket has been overwhelmingly successful and will again pack a punch with artists like Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean in 2016.

Will Live Nation's Ticket to Rock pave the way for future tours linking up under one ticket cost? It's certainly feasible, though its success will ultimately rest on how well this summer's tour circuit is received. If a hit, expect to see even bigger rock artists joining forces before long.
