Rapidly catching up to the European scene in terms of attendances, the US festival circuit is currently in such rude health that many of its key events have been forced to expand this year to accommodate demand for tickets. Indeed, SXSW and Ultra Music Festival may already have been and gone, but catering for everyone from metalheads to ravers to all-round music fans, the rest of the 2013 music festival season is just as inclusive and eclectic as ever.
Staged this year over the April 12-14 and 19-21 weekends, Coachella, of course, remains the king of America’s festivals, even more so following last year’s stunt of resurrecting Tupac from the dead. Currently, Coachella tickets are averaging around $600 for 3-day passes for each weekend. Like last year, the 2013 line-up is still mightily impressive with headline sets from The Stone Roses, Blur, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phoenix confirmed alongside long-awaited returns from Franz Ferdinand, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Modest Mouse, superstar DJ slots from Eric Prydz and Paul Oakenfold and comebacks from the recently reunited Wu Tung Clan, The Postal Service and Jurassic 5.
Reflecting the rise of the EDM movement, the Electric Daisy Carnival will travel to Chicago for the first time in its history (May 24-26) in-between stops at New York and Las Vegas, with Billboard mainstays David Guetta and Avicii scheduled to appear at Citi Field in addition to the likes of Australian duo Empire of the Sun and veteran DJs Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto. Electric Daisy Carnival tickets are currently averaging $415.
While the more indie-led Sasquatch! Music Festival can boast Vampire Weekend, Sigur Ros, Mumford and Sons, The Postal Service and The xx as headliners when it returns to Washington’s The Gorge Amphitheatre on May 24-27th, with Arctic Monkeys, Grimes and Bloc Party just some of the other big names on the bill. Now in its 12th year, the Bonnaroo Music Festival has expanded from its folk-rock roots to incorporate everything from reggae to country to jazz. This year’s event, which takes place at the Great Stage Park in Manchester, Tennessee on June 13-16 is no less varied with classic rock acts Billy Idol and ZZ Top joining the likes of hip-hop talents Nas and Kendrick Lamar, Mercury Prize winners Alt-J and The xx and comedians Weird Al Yankovic and Daniel Tosh on the bill, with Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Mumford and Sons confirmed as headliners.
Billed as the world’s largest music festival with regular attendances of one million, Milwaukee’s Summerfest includes an incredible 700 bands across 11 stages over 11 days. Held at Henry Maier Festival Park from June 26th to July 7th, this year’s line-up features acts as eclectic as boyband New Kids On The Block, country troubadour Jason Aldean and prog-rock veterans Rush, while The Eagles, Tom Petty and fun. are also scheduled to perform. Currently, Summerfest tickets are averaging $165, with a get-in price of $48.
Of course, several major festivals are yet to announce their line-ups, including Lollapalooza, which will be staged at Chicago’s Grant Park on August 2-4, Seattle’s music and arts festival, Bumbershoot, which will be held over the Labor Day weekend of August 31-September 2, and Austin City Limits, which will now take place over two weekends at Zilker Park (October 4-6 and October 11-13).
