Coldplay Announces 2014 Tour Dates

April 17, 2014

Yes, Coldplay will tour in 2014. No, they won’t be playing the massive stadiums and arenas you would expect. Instead, one of Britain’s biggest bands have announced just a handful of dates in six intimate theatres taking place in select U.S. and European cities from April 25 to July 1. Coldplay tickets are currently only available for the tour’s opening date in Germany.

The tour is in support of Coldplay’s sixth and newest album Ghost Stories, which is scheduled for release in North America on May 19. It is the band’s first album on Atlantic Records, although the record is also currently available for presale via iTunes.

The largely pared-down Ghost Stories tour stands in stark contrast to the band’s last tour, the massive Mylo Xyloto tour. That tour saw the band playing 80 shows in massive stadiums and arenas across five continents, where it grossed over $192 million en route to becoming one of the highest-grossing tours of all time. That tour kicked off October 1 in Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park and concluded New Year’s Eve 2012 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

The band previewed some of their new material from Ghost Stories at last month’s iTunes Festival at SXSW in Austin. Having sold more than 70 million records worldwide since its 1996 inception, Coldplay are the proud owners of seven Grammys, eight BRIT Awards, and five MTV Music Video Awards — in addition to creating the world’s best-selling album of 2005, X & Y.

Coldplay kicks off their 2014 Ghost Stories tour in Cologne, Germany, before making their way to the U.S. for two shows that will feature performances at New York’s Beacon Theatre as well as Royce Hall in Los Angeles. Afterwards, the band will take flight for Paris and head east to Tokyo before concluding the tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Coldplay has made some waves via social media the past few weeks with two new tracks. “Magic” and “Midnight” have been making the rounds on Youtube and iTunes as the group prepares for their sixth studio album. Coldplay only release one single in 2013, “Atlas”. The song off the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack climbed as high as number 69 on the Billboard 200.

The 9-track “Ghost Stories” is set to be released on May 19th through Parlophone Records. With the release of a new album, many are hoping the UK-natives will set sail for a full fledged US tour in 2014, and many expect that will happen. While tour dates, cities, or even plans aren't yet available, be sure to keep checking back for the latest tips on getting the best deals on Coldplay tickets. Their last tour, the Mylo Xyloto tour, saw the band travel around Europe, North America and Australasia between October 2011 and December 2012.
