April 30, 2014
(UPDATE) Emo innovators American Football have expanded their reunion tour into 2015 the announcement of 3 shows in the UK this May.
...
The past couple years has seen a surprising trend of emo bands reuniting. Just when some were ready to put the proverbial nail in the coffin for the often misunderstood genre, it comes back swinging. Bands from the emo heyday of the mid/late 90’s to the early 2000’s are reuniting and going back on tour while some are recording new material. Fan favorites Braid, Texas is the Reason, and The Promise Ring have all reunited in the last year or two and now 2014 is no different. Math rock influenced emo outfit Owls put out a new record earlier this year entitled Two and embarking on a summer tour this year. Owls’ drummer Mike Kinsella is also reuniting his own former emo side project American Football, which last released the cult favorite self-titled album back in 1999 before breaking up in 2000. American Football is not only getting a deluxe edition re-release of their 1999 record, but are also playing the Pygmalion Festival in their home state of Illinois in Champaign on September 28th. American Football are also playing three shows in New York City at Webster Hall on October 10th, 11th, and 12th.
90’s emo legends Mineral are also back in action for 2014. The Austin based band is reuniting after 16 years to play a small string of shows this fall. With opening act Into it Over it, these tickets are sure to sell fast luckily for NYC fans Mineral is playing two shows, both at the Bowery Ballroom on September 5th and 6th. On November 2nd Mineral is playing the Fest 13 in Gainesville, Florida. This is a must attend for true emo, punk, and hardcore fans as Mineral is sharing the stage with other legends Circle Takes the Square, The Descendents, and Hot Water Music.
Another nack together 90’s emo outfit The Jazz June, are streaming a new song for first time in 12 years. The new single “Over Underground” will come out later this year on a 7” split with the band Dikembe. Other than a one off show in Philadelphia earlier in the month no other shows or tour announcements have been made. Seattle natives Sunny Day Real Estate may of reunited officially back in 2009 but it has taken 5 years for them to release any new music. They have just put out a new single “Lipton Witch” on a split with Circa Survive, their first new release since 2000’s The Rising Tide. Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green is playing some shows with Saosin, the band he left after 2003’s Translating the Name ep to form Circa Survive. Saosin with Anthony Green are playing the Skate and Surf Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey on Saturday May 17th where they will share the stage with fellow early 2000’s emo darlings Midtown. 2014 looks to be another crazy year for music and with an emo revival in full swing. Old fans can see their favorite bands from when they were in high school and college and new younger fans can see these legends for the first time in venues that best suit the bands.
