From Austin City Limits To Warped Tour: The Must-See Festivals Of 2014

From the counter-culture celebration that is Burning Man to the EDM party of the Electric Daisy Carnival to the industry favorite South by Southwest, the North American festival scene is home to some of the most diverse, thrilling and unique live musical experiences in the world. Here’s a look at 17 of its must-see events in 2014.

Austin City Limits

Named after the PBS concert series, Austin City Limits will return for the 13th time across the weekends of October 3-5 and 10-12, with over half a million fans expected to descend upon Zilker Park for a feast of country, indie, electronica and rock over eight stages. Details of this year’s line-up are yet to emerge but those who bought Austin City Limits tickets for last year’s event –the final day of which had to be cancelled due to flash floods and heavy rains – got to see headline sets from The Cure, Muse, Kings Of Leon and Depeche Mode.

Bonnaroo

Initially a haven for folk rock outfits and jam bands, Tennessee’s Bonnaroo has since expanded its musical remit to encompass everything from reggae to hip-hop to jazz, while the addition of various arts and crafts stalls, specialist cinema and comedy tents and a ferris wheel have also helped to create a unique carnival atmosphere. Festivalgoers with Bonnaroo tickets for 2014 – which takes place at Great Stage Park over the weekend of June 12-15 – should expect a line-up as diverse as last year, which saw Paul McCartney, R. Kelly and Mumford & Sons top the bill.

Bumbershoot

Named after the colloquial term for umbrella, North America’s largest urban arts festival has been attracting huge audiences ever since it first arrived at the 74-acre Seattle Center back in 1971. Staged over the Labor Day weekend of August 30-September 1, details of this year’s celebration of the best in music, film, comedy, spoken word, dance, theatre, performance and visual art have yet to be confirmed. But those with Bumbershoot tickets for last year’s event had the chance to see everyone from Death Cab To Cutie to fun. to Kendrick Lamar.

Burning Man

After selling a record-breaking 64,000 Burning Man tickets in 2013, North America’s most distinctive festival will once again return to the Black Rock Desert on August 25 – September 1. Named after the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy which is set alight on the event’s penultimate night, the eight-day celebration of art, community and self-expression will feature over 2000 different classes, while last year’s spectacle featured DJ sets from Paul Oakenfold, Nervo and Major Lazer.

Coachella

Staged this year over the April 11-13 and 18-20 weekends at Indio’s Empire Polo Club, Coachella remains the king of America’s music festivals. Headlined this year by Arcade Fire, Muse and a returning Outkast, those with Coachella tickets can also enjoy performances from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Beck, Lana Del Rey, The Knife, Foster The People, Motorhead, The Replacements, Broken Bells, Ellie Goulding, Skrillex, Calvin Harris Pet Shop Boys and various newcomers including Lorde, Disclosure, Bastille, Rudimental, The 1975 and Haim.

Electric Daisy Carnival

Reflecting the globe-conquering nature of the EDM scene, the Electric Daisy Carnival will travel to Mexico for the first time in its history on March 15-16 while also taking in New Jersey (May 24-25) and Las Vegas’ Motor Speedway (June 20-22) with dates in London, Orlando and Puerto Rico expected to be confirmed later this year. Fans with Electric Daisy Carnival tickets should look forward to appearances from a whole host of superstar DJs with last year’s event featuring sets from David Guetta, Avicii and Armin Van Buuren.

Electric Zoo

Also expanding their brand, New York’s premier festival will head south of the border too this year, taking in Mexico City on May 3-4. The celebration of dance music has continued to grow in stature since its 2009 debut, with over 110,000 Electric Zoo tickets sold for last year’s event, the final day of which was cancelled after the drug-related deaths of two festivalgoers. Information about the 2014 event is currently scarce, but it’s expected to return to Randall’s Island over the Labor Day weekend of August 30-September 1.

Firefly Music Festival

Expanding to a fourth day due to the demand for Firefly Music Festival tickets, the ‘East Coast’s Premier Music Experience’ will take place at The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway in Delaware from June 19-22. Still in its infancy, last year’s second annual event managed to attract the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Vampire Weekend. And with a further three stages added to this year’s festival, the as-yet-unannounced 2014 bill should be even more impressive.

Lollapalooza

Founded by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band in the early 90s, but since transformed into one of the world’s biggest live music events, Lollapalooza tickets are some of the most hotly-sought after on the festival scene. As well as returning to its natural home, Chicago’s Grant Park, on August 1-3, Lollapalooza will also visit Chile on Mar 29-30, Argentina on April 1-2 and Brazil on April 5-6 where the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Arcade Fire and Nine Inch Nails will all perform.

Made In America

Following the sale of 120,000 Made In America tickets in 2013, the festival curated by Jay-Z is expected to return to Philadelphia later this year with another eclectic line-up of artists both established and emerging. Details about the event, which last year was staged at Benjamin Franklin Parkway over the Labor Day weekend, have yet to be confirmed. But if the line-up is as impressive as 2013’s (Beyonce, Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of the Stone Age), Made In America should cement its status as one of the hottest new festivals on the scene.

Outside Lands

Following 2013 headline slots from the likes of Paul McCartney, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, one of the world’s most eco-friendly music festivals will return to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for the seventh time later this summer. Official news about Outside Lands tickets have yet to be confirmed but the celebration of music, food and wine, which has become renowned for its green initiatives since arriving on the scene back in 2008, is expected to take place over the weekend of August 8-10.

Rock The Bells

Despite cancelling key dates in Washington, D.C. and New York last year, promoters have confirmed that Rock The Bells tickets will go on sale for the eleventh annual touring hip-hop festival in 2014. Last year’s tenth anniversary celebrations resurrected two iconic late rappers, Eazy-E and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, with the same hologram technology that brought Tupac back to life at Coachella, and also featured sets from the likes of Chase & Status, Rakim and Jurassic 5.

Sasquatch!

After selling out Sasquatch! tickets in just 90 minutes last year, one of Washington’s biggest music festivals will now expand from a four-day event to two three-day events in 2014. Returning to The Gorge on the weekends of Memorial Day (May 23-25) and the Fourth of July (July 4-6) – each of which will have totally separate line-ups – Sasquatch! will no doubt be aiming to secure a typically eclectic range of artists with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Sigur Ros, The Postal Service and Mumford & Sons topping the bill in 2013.

Summerfest

With regular sales of over one million Summerfest tickets, Milwaukee’s eleven-day event has been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest music festival. Held at Henry Maier Festival Park from June 25-29 and July 1-6, this year’s Summerfest will once again showcase an incredible 700 bands across eleven different stages with Lady Gaga recently announced as the first headline act (June 26) in her first show in the city since 2010. Dave Matthews Band, Bruno Mars, Zac Brown Band and Motley Crue will also be headlining this year's festival.

Ultra Music Festival

In the same year that it makes its debut in South Africa and Colombia, dance music’s premier festival will also return to the one-weekend format at its birthplace of Miami’s Bayfront Park on March 28-30. Warped Tour
