Top 5 MLB Tickets Of The Week (5/12)

May 12, 2014

It’s no surprise that the Subway Series is the most expensive game of the week. What is surprising is that the Thursday game at Citi Field is the only of the four games in the series that makes the list, not the two games at Yankees Stadium. But ticket prices haven’t moved for the game over the course of the week, and of the top five games, the Boston Red Sox game in Minnesota is the only game with a major upward trend. Overall, the New York Yankees and Red Sox appear twice on this list, both as an away and home team, with a interleague Los Angeles Angels at Philadelphia Phillies game rounding out the top five.

5/15 New York Yankees vs. New York Mets | Avg. Price: $159.05 | Get-in Price: $42

The New York Yankees haven’t had the greatest stretch of games. They’re 4-6 over their last ten and have fallen a game and a half out of first place, but that’s nothing compared to what the Mets have gone through. Yesterday’s extra innings win over the Phillies was only their second win in their last ten games. They’re tied with the Phillies in the basement of the NL East at 17-19. That helps explain why prices haven’t move for an already expensive game. With a get-in price of $42, Mets tickets are more than double the next most expensive game on this list.

5/17 Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox | Avg. Price: $138.83 | Get-in Price: $15

A rematch of last season’s ALCS is the second game on this list, even though prices have dropped two percent for this game on the Boston Red Sox schedule. Red Sox tickets at Fenway Park are averaging $138.83 for the game against a Detroit Tigers team that currently has the highest winning percentage in the AL. But getting in won’t be too expensive, the cheapest ticket is $15 which is the second cheapest on this list.

5/17 Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Yankees | Avg. Price: $128.32 | Get-in Price: $20

The Yankees always seem to make this list. This week, not only are they first and third in average price, but they are first and second in get-in price. The $20 get-in price for Yankees tickets is second only to their game against the Mets at Citi Field earlier in the week. They’ll be facing the Pittsburgh Pirates in another interleague series with the average price at $128.32 after a slight two percent increase in price.

5/13 Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins | Avg. Price: $118.81 | Get-in Price: $6

The Minnesota Twins game has seen easily the largest increase of the week with the Red Sox coming to town. Twins tickets are up 17 percent for an average price of $118.81, even though the team hasn’t been overly impressive recently. The Twins recently called former first-round pick Chris Parmelee back to the majors after injuries depleted their outfield, and that could help explain the price spike. The get-in price is still very low, and at $6 is easily the lowest on this list.

5/14 Los Angeles Angels vs. Philadelphia Phillies | Avg. Price: $79.74 | Get-in Price: $17

On the other end of the spectrum Phillies tickets have seen the biggest drop on this list, with prices down ten percent. The game is the only one of the week with prices below $100. The third interleague game on the list features teams heading in different directions. The Phillies have fallen back to the bottom of the NL East, while the Angels have slowly been making their way to the top of the AL West, currently second in the standings. Phillies vs Angels tickets are averaging $79.74 with a get-in price of $17.
