NASCAR To Hold SpongeBob SquarePants 400 at Kansas Speedway May 9

(3/3/15) NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series just got a lot funnier. The world’s best drivers will come together for a May 9 race at the Kansas Speedway for what is now officially called the “SpongeBob SquarePants 400”, an obvious homage to Nickelodeon’s beloved cartoon show that’s dominated the airwaves since the turn of the century.

Kansas Speedway president Patrick Warren announced the track’s partnership with Nickelodeon via a press release on Monday. Warren hopes to generate a bigger children audience through promoting SpongeBob SquarePants, which has garnered more than $8 billion in merchandising revenue since first airing on the iconic cartoon channel in 1999.

Tickets have already started to flood the secondary market. The average price for SpongeBob SquarePants 400 tickets on TicketIQ is $145.21. Fans can get in for just $22, however.

The May 9 race will feature a Nickelodeon Kids Zone in the usual Fan Zone. Costumed characters, photo stations and more will also be abundant around the track. Family-friendly activities from Bikini Bottom, home of the cartoon’s title character, will take over the Kansas Speedway all weekend. The event is set to be broadcast on FOX Sports 1 at 6:30 pm.

Prior to this year’s SpongeBob SquarePants 400, Nickelodeon sponsored the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2004.
