Recently, we stumbled across another Top 25 ranking that undoubtedly influences a team’s placement on the TicketIQ Top 25.  A recent article from the TicketCity Blog ranks the top 25 biggest college football rivalries, based on several individual metrics.  Below are the rankings…

The individual metrics included recent popularity, notoriety, history, and competition.  Each of these metrics was determined by several subcategories (for example, recent popularity is based off of attendance, stadium capacity filled, and ticket demand.)  As you can see, Alabama and LSU take the top spot as the biggest college football rivalry in the land.  The two have squared off in a recent national championship and many regular season contests (one which has been dubbed the “Game of the Century.”)  That game had the highest average ticket price in 2012, with an average price of $467.39.  Bama and LSU have also combined for 19 total national championships, a number that only trails the combinations of Michigan and Notre Dame, Notre Dame and USC, and Alabama and Tennessee.

Alabama has three of the top-9 rivalries (Bama vs. Auburn is 5th, and the Crimson Tide and Volunteers of Tennessee are 9th) while LSU also ranks 8th against Texas A&M and 14th against Ole Miss.  The only rivalry to not include a team from the SEC, Big-12, Big-10, Pac-12, or Notre Dame is the number 6th ranked rivalry, Army vs. Navy.  The military academies have long held their place in college football lore as one of the most intense rivalries in sports, and despite the gradual fall from national championship contention back in the early 20th century, the rivalry has remained as competitive as ever.
