Regardless of the teams involved, the year or location, the Super Bowl is always one of the biggest events in sports. Super Bowl XLIX has taken that to another level this year with the highest ticket demand ever seen on the secondary market. With a current average price of $10,559.42, Super Bowl XLIX became the first sporting event since TicketIQ began tracking data in 2010 to eclipse an average price of $10,000.

Previously, the highest average price for any sporting event came in the summer of 2014 for the World Cup Final. While the Super Bowl does have an international appeal, the World Cup not only has that, but only occurs every four years. The 1-0 Germany win over Argentina had an average ticket price of $7,679.81. The semifinal game between eventual champion Germany and host country Brazil was one of the most expensive games as well with an average price of $2,702.29.

The most expensive football game before the Super Bowl had been the 2011 BCS National Championship Game between the Auburn Tigers and Oregon Ducks. That game was also held at University of Phoenix Stadium, the host stadium of Super Bowl XLIX. Prior to this Super Bowl, the 2011 game was the only American sporting event to have an average price above $5,000.

Not surprisingly, other Super Bowls make up a third of the other nine events following this year’s game. The 2011 Super Bowl, XLV, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers was held at AT&T Stadium, where the average price was $3,649.41. Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants was at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis with an average price of $2,955.56. Last year’s Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos had an average price of $2,567 at MetLife Stadium.

During the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks drew the two highest priced hockey games on the secondary market. Game 6 at TD Garden in Boston had an average price of $3,117.00 in a game the Bruins had to win to force a Game 7. They would win and Game 7 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver had an average price of $3,834.74.

A lightning rod of controversy, Floyd Mayweather has been the biggest draw in boxing. His 2013 fight against Canelo Alvarez was the most expensive boxing match since 2010. The fight drew an average price of $2,887.69.
