Where Does This Weekend's Bout With Liam Smith Rank Among Canelo Alvarez's Priciest Fights?

September 15, 2016

Four months ago, Canelo Alvarez took Amir Khan to six rounds at the newly-opened T-Mobile Arena, KO'ing the British sensation to retain his WBC, The Ring and lineal middleweight titles. A new challenge awaits at AT&T Stadium this weekend as the 26-year-old looks to make his next mark in the light middleweight class against current WBO champion Liam Smith.

And for fans with interest in attending the grand affair in Arlington, Canelo vs. Smith tickets on the secondary market won't be cheap.

Of his 14 professional fights since 2011, Canelo's bout with Smith this Saturday owns the sixth highest average resale price. Tickets to Saturday's fight on TicketIQ currently average $278.72 and the cheapest available ticket is now $83.

Saturday's fight won't crack Canelo's top five most expensive bouts on the secondary market, but it's worth noting that resale ticket demand remains high even with the fight being held at the 80,000+ capacity AT&T Stadium. Canelo is no stranger to fighting in stadium-sized venues - he defeated Austin Trout at Alamodome to win the WBA Regular title in 2013 before taking down James Kirkland at Minute Maid Park in 2015 - but neither of those matches generated similar prices to this weekend's fight on the secondary market. AT&T Stadium is a fitting venue for a prized fight as big as Saturday's, and fans will be paying up to be on hand.

Smith will defend his WBO title for a third time after previously defeating Jimmy Kelly and Predrag Radošević in his native England. While Kelly lasted seven rounds before losing via TKO Radošević proved no threat to Smith, falling by way of knockout in just the second round. He'll have have his work cut out for him this weekend, however, as the 28-year-old confronts arguably the greatest current fighter in professional boxing in Canelo.
