This summer an inventive new musical “Hamilton” will be transferred to the Broadway stage beginning on July 13 for its first showing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46st in New York City. The show stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, who takes the stage as Hamilton, the unlikely founding father who was a bastard born orphan to George Washington’s right hand man, to rebel to war hero, to a loving husband caught in the country’s first sex scandal.
The musical is based Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, which was then presented for the first time at the public theater. Since first debuting Off-Broadway, the musical is already the most acclaimed show of the season, piling up many awards before its debut on Broadway this summer. Those awards include seven Drama Desk Awards, one for Best Musical.
Hamilton has also won the Best Musical award from the New York Drama Critics, The OBIE’s, The Lucille Lortel, The Outer Critics Circle, and the Off-Broadway Alliance. More awards are still to come perhaps, once the much buzzed musical makes its transformation to the Broadway Stage as the show wrapped its production at the Public Theater last month. Now with its transfer to Broadway, Hamilton will be eligible for Pulitzer Prize and Tony nominations which are only limited to Broadway productions for next season.
Tickets are now on sale for the new Broadway show Hamilton which is directed by Thomas Kail and features a book, music, and lyrics by Miranda. Hamilton will begin previews on July 13 and officially open at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 6. Secondary market prices for Hamilton tickets are anticipating huge demand as the play is averaging over $300 for its run starting on July 13 and tickets are available through the end of March. The first preview currently has an average of $611.12 with a get-in price of $171.
Besides Lin Manuel Miranda in the starring role, the others members of the cast include Jonathan Groff as King George, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Leslie Odom Jr as Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Daveed Diggs as Marquis De Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, and Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler.
