2021 Update - Broadway Reopening

After over 500 days in the dark, the lights came back up on Broadway on September 2nd, with the return of Hadestown and Waitress. September 14th marked the return ChicagoHamiltonWicked and The Lion King, with other big shows returning throughout the fall. 2021 will also welcome several highly-anticipated new shows, including MJ the Musical and Diana the Musical.  For all Broadway performances through to October 31, audience members, cast, crew and theatre staff must be fully vaccinated, and it's safe to assume that that will be the case for the foreseeable future.

Show Details & Reviews

Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, traces the evolution of this Motown musical group and is considered a jukebox musical. Music and lyrics are by The Temptations and Dominique Morisseau wrote the book while Des McAnuff directs and Sergio Trujillo is the choreographer. The show opened on Broadway in March 2019 after a series of regional performances dating to the Berkeley Rep in 2017 and wrapping up at the Princess of Wales Theater in Toronto in October and November of 2018.

The show has gotten strong reviews, as much for the music as the handling of the story of the Temptations.

“It’s the music that is the sole survivor,” wrote New York Times critic Ben Brantley. “And that’s what’s being celebrated here – the collective miracle of a blissfully silken sound forged out of clashing egos, many misfires and life-wrecking hard work into numbers that keep playing in our memories.”

From the Hollywood Reporter: “These (songs) and more than two dozen others — or at least part of them — are performed with power and flair by a first-rate cast and played by a fabulous 18-piece orchestra led by music director/arranger Kenny Seymour. The musicians deservedly get a special bow and massive applause when they're revealed at the rear of the stage during the curtain calls.

The briskly paced production frequently generates the excitement of a terrific concert, fueled by Howell Binkley's dynamic lights, Steve Canyon Kennedy's pulsing sound design and Peter Nigrini's projections on a minimal set, with tour dates, cities and venues flashing across the rear wall.”
