Frozen is the story of orphaned princesses Anna and her older sister, Elsa, who rules the kingdom of Arendelle after her parents disappear at sea. Elsa has the power to freeze things and create endless winter – powers she struggles to control. Branded a monster when her powers are revealed, Elsa banishes herself to the mountains, but must return after mistakenly freezing Anna’s heart. Only Elsa’s true love can reverse the damage.
The show’s music and lyrics are by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and the book is by Jennifer Lee. Frozen was nominated for three Tony Awards and won a Drama Desk Award in 2018 for Outstanding Puppet Design.
The show received mediocre reviews, but audiences can’t help but be impressed by the technology, creativity of the puppets and puppeteers, and roused by the musical numbers.
In its review, the New York Times found Frozen to be “unusually coherent for a Disney musical,” and called it “beautiful to look at.”
The Hollywood Reporter praised leads Caissie Levy (Elsa) and Patti Murin (Anna), respectively.
